Frequency Assignment and Multicoloring Powers of Square and Triangular Meshes

2005

The static frequency assignment problem on cellular networks can be abstracted as a multicoloring problem on a weighted graph, where each vertex of the graph is a base station in the network, and the weight associated with each vertex represents the number of calls to be served at the vertex. The edges of the graph model interference constraints for frequencies assigned to neighboring stations. In this paper, we first propose an algorithm to multicolor any weighted planar graph with at most $\frac{11}{4}W$ colors, where W denotes the weighted clique number. Next, we present a polynomial time approximation algorithm which garantees at most 2W colors for multicoloring a power square mesh. Fur…

Wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection system

2003

In this paper, a wavelet-based efficient simulation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection systems (LPS) is presented. The analysis of electromagnetic transients is carried out by employing the thin-wire electric field integral equation in frequency domain. In order to easily handle the boundary conditions of the integral equation, semiorthogonal compactly supported spline wavelets, constructed for the bounded interval [0,1], have been taken into account in expanding the unknown longitudinal currents. The integral equation is then solved by means of the Galerkin method. As a preprocessing stage, a discrete wavelet transform is used in order to efficiently compress the Fouri…

Validation of a New Method for the Diagnosis of Rotor bar Failures via Wavelet Transformation in Industrial Induction Machines

2006

[EN] In this paper, the authors propose a method for the diagnosis of rotor bar failures in induction machines, based on the analysis of the stator current during the startup using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Unlike other approaches, the study of the high-order wavelet signals resulting from the decomposition is the core of the proposed method. After an introduction of the physical and mathematical bases of the method, a description of the proposed approach is given; for this purpose, a numerical model of induction machine is used in such a way that the effects of a bar breakage can clearly be shown, avoiding the influence of other phenomena not related with the fault. Afterward, …

An Analytical Comparison between DWT and Hilbert-Huang-Based Methods for the Diagnosis of Rotor Asymmetries in Induction Machines

2007

In the paper two alternative tools are applied and compared in order to diagnose the presence of rotor asymmetries in induction machines. Both tools are applied to the stator startup current. The objective is to extract the evolution during the startup transient of the left sideband harmonic associated with the asymmetry, which constitutes a reliable evidence of the presence of the fault. The first tool is the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its validity for the diagnosis was proven by the authors in previous works, even in cases where the classical Fourier approach does not lead to correct results. Despite its good results, some constraints remained, such as the selection of an optima…

Fractional wavelet transform

1997

The wavelet transform, which has had a growing importance in signal and image processing, has been generalized by association with both the wavelet transform and the fractional Fourier transform. Possible implementations of the new transformation are in image compression, image transmission, transient signal processing, etc. Computer simulations demonstrate the abilities of the novel transform. Optical implementation of this transform is briefly discussed.

Application of wavelet analysis to acoustic emission pulses generated by partial discharges

2004

The subject matter of this paper refers to the improvement of the acoustic emission (AE) method when used for detection, measurement and location of partial discharges (PDs) in oil insulation systems of power appliances. The detailed subject matter refers to the issues connected with the application of modern methods of digital processing of signals obtained during technical high-power measurements. The paper presents the results of measurements and analyses of the AE pulses generated in setups making the modeling of basic PD forms that can occur in oil insulations possible. The research concentrated mainly on the following types of PDs: point-plane, multipoint-plane, multipoint-plane with …

Stochastic response determination of structural systems modeled via dependent coordinates: a frequency domain treatment based on generalized modal an…

2019

Generalized independent coordinates are typically utilized within an analytical dynamics framework to model the motion of structural and mechanical engineering systems. Nevertheless, for complex systems, such as multi-body structures, an explicit formulation of the equations of motion by utilizing generalized, independent, coordinates can be a daunting task. In this regard, employing a set of redundant coordinates can facilitate the formulation of the governing dynamics equations. In this setting, however, standard response analysis techniques cannot be applied in a straightforward manner. For instance, defining and determining a transfer function within a frequency domain response analysis…

Macro-uncertainty and financial stress spillovers in the Eurozone

2020

Abstract This paper studies macro-uncertainty and financial distress spillovers within the Eurozone. We propose a novel methodology to derive the indices of spillovers, by using a Global Vector autoregressive model fitted to data sampled at mixed-frequencies. We find that macro-uncertainty and financial stress are relatively disconnected in the Eurozone. We also show that connectedness between core and periphery Eurozone countries mainly operates through financial stress and it decreases since the outbreak of the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis (with an increasing role played by peripheral countries). As a result, investors and policymakers should monitor separately macro-uncertainty and fin…

Discrete frequency models for inventory management – an introduction

2001

Abstract The paper deals with the problem of devising a periodic replenishment policy when orders must be periodic, but only a given, discrete set of order frequencies can be used. The multi-item, instantaneous replenishment case with known demand is studied. In particular, staggering policies somehow arranging replenishments not to come at the same time instants are considered. The paper is composed of three parts: first, a taxonomy of several versions of the discrete frequency problem is proposed, according to different elements; in the second part, a general mixed integer programming model is proposed which is able to capture the peculiarities of the whole spectrum of this kind of proble…

Causal flows between oil and forex markets using high-frequency data: Asymmetries from good and bad volatility

2019

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. This paper investigates the causal linkages in volatility between crude oil prices and six major bilateral exchange rates against the U.S. dollar in the time-frequency space using high-frequency intraday data. Special attention is paid to the potential asymmetries in the causal effects between oil and forex markets. The wavelet-based Granger causality method proposed by Olayeni (2016) is applied to quantify the causal relations in the time and frequency domains simultaneously. Moreover, the realized semivariance approach of Barndoff-Nielsen et a…
